NaNoWriMo 2007
PinkCthulhu's weblog for NaNoWriMo

Thursday, 29 October 2009

Doing NaNoWriMo again this year.  This one will be a prequel to both Possum's story and Dragon's Last Whisper, with both Possum and Galen in it, Possum narrating.  "Blood Will Have Blood".  There will be lots of vampires, although I'm a bit embarrassed since vampires are so 'in' right now.  I'm hoping that Possum's relentless mockery of them will soften their annoying fashionability.  And, my vampires are scarcely the soft-porn pop-culture vampires that are mostly running around out there this year.

Last year's effort, Tal's story, went well, and has been going well, but nowhere near finished.

NaNoWriMo 2008

Haha!  I forgot all about this damned blog!

Well, let's see... last year I cranked out 50k+ words of 'Rabbit, Moon', the Calla Station story, and there's still a lot of story to go.  Haven't finished it.

This year I did it again.  This time around I started on the sequel to Winds.  Yeah, it's not going to be pretty, but so far it's about a cavalryman named Tal.  He'll run into Tyagi after the end of Winds.  Then it will really get ugly.

I also cheated and wrote 50k words of fiction for the month, not 50k in just one story.  So I got in some progress in DLW as well.  Now I just need to kill off a bunch of people and everything will be fine.

NaNoWriMo
Topic: NaNoWriMo 2007

All right!  NaNoWriMo 2007 has started, and I'm already up to 8+k words, and in Chapter 4.  I decided to go with the Calla Station story, mostly because it's something entirely new, and all my other ideas were based on worlds and characters I already have.

The basic Calla Station idea seemed less than inspirational, however, and it took the idea of adding a character that's been quietly hanging out in my head for a few years to get it moving.  Aran first appeared in a poem I wrote, called "Rabbit, Moon", years ago, and he's never been able to see anything in the moon but a rabbit.
He seemed like the perfect candidate for a trip to Calla.

NaNoWriMo 2007
Topic: NaNoWriMo 2007

NaNoWriMo is about to roll around again.  I'm due for another novel, so I'll give it a shot again.

I am disappointedly not done with Dragon's Last Whisper.  It went well for a while but I've been essentially stuck for months and months, although I've done a couple rewrites to try and get it back under control.  That hasn't worked.  I know what happens inthe big picture, I'm just having a hard time getting there.  I'm in Chapter 12.

There are several new characters or characters with greatly expanded roles, including Keye, Eus, Nkiju, Shooter Thompson ( I love Shooter), Uerch, Kinn, Muutsweeno, Slissar, Tolar, and my personal favorite, an extremely high Kaev.  Even old Boot shows up.  So do a ton of meese.  I'll poke at it before November, but am going to have to admit, I think, that I'll have to set it aside for a while.

I did finish 'Saint Possum and the Ebon Miris', which was not a NaNoWriMo effort.  It's my best novel so far.   Finished it in June 2006 and have edited it a couple times now.  I like it a lot.  <3 Possum.

Now for something new.  I've got several ideas for this year's novel, and am trying to decide which one I'll have the most fun with.

1) The sequel to Winds of this World.  I know what happens.  It's not pretty.

2) The story of the people at Calla Station, an isolated space outpost along a trade route, right at the edge of a particularly dangerous region of space.  It's a bit like a lighthouse, and it's run by a family.  This could be epicly long.

3)  The story of what happened to Loquen after he went after the slavers.  Meh.

4) The blood poisoning matter with the vampires (Juncture story with Possum and Galen, and Aulus too).  This is more likely a short story or novella.

5) Redo of Spiritwalkers.  Meh. No point in rewriting something old.

I've got a month or so to hash it out.  Hopefully I pick something especially inspirational.  November is going to suck time wise - two weeks on duty, including Thanksgiving, and a push from 2 separate guilds to play EQ in November (which I was going to drop for a month).  Oh well - if I can squeeze in a trip to Mexico and get a novel out, I should be able to do it again this year, right?  Right? Guh.

I'm up to Chapter 5 in  book 2.  Going well so far with a few surprises.  The Daere are doing much more poorly than I originally thought they would be.  Keye is apparently going to be more frequently seen.  Galen has a few years of training and experience under his belt and ergo rocks.  I suspect this is going to get bloody.

cheers

weiner!
wooooo I'm a weiner. er... winner. Meh. Weiner.

I hit 50,000 words just before midnight Friday the 25th. I finished book one AND the interlude tonight (27th) and submitted my word count to NaNoWriMo, which came up with a total of 57333.

Changed the title to 'Dragon's Last Whisper', which is yeah, a little corny, but oh well. I'll take a little side dish of corn with the whole damned novel, thank you very much.

Now for Book Two, The Plague. I've got some good ideas for it, oh yeah. Eus will be back a lot, I think, and Issa too a little. Possum might make a cameo. And of course Galen will be back, a few years older and a lot more experienced. There will be a lot of new people, a lot of new places, after all the rest of this is in Juncture.

Wow, I can tell I'm busy when I don't bother to update my whine-o-matic.

The trip to Mexico for business took me out of action for about 5 days, and I ended up way, way behind on the word count. Another trip to Chicago nearly wiped me out of wanting to continue, but after a marathon session I'm back up to within....uh.... crap, about 6k away from where I should be right now. Pewp. I'm at about 22k words and in Chapter 8. I'm hoping I can catch up this weekend. Last time around Thanksgiving weekend saved my sorry butt too.

As far as the story goes, it's humming along nicely with what I had originally planned. Eus was an unexpected addition and seems to be working out well, though I nearly killed him off. I decided to spare him and he'll return years later in book 2. I've added the 'interlude' page after I realized I needed a short chapter between books one and two. Hopefully book one will be done at around 25k words, right in the middle of the length I want for this one. No more 130k word epics that consume my soul for two years please.

Finished Chapter 2, up to 5300 words. Going ok so far, already exhausted the meager outline I had though.

Work sucks. Eleven to twelve hour days all week. Why am I doing this again?

Galen's story
Well, National Novel Writing Month has rolled around again. NaNoWriMo 2005 is upon me. I've decided to go for it again this year, since Winds is done. Probably a very foolish decision, because I'm scary busy at work - going out of country one week, out of town the next, a gazillion projects when I am in town and a busy duty schedule on top of it all. But, what the hey.

This novel is about Galen - "Galen's story" is the working title. (Has absolutely nothing to do with Kyur other than he has a cool name that really fit my character) I guess I'm not too imaginative when it comes to working titles: Tyagi's story, Possum's story, Galen's story. I always have to see what becomes important in the book. I've signed up under PinkCthulhu on the NaNoWriMo site again this year.

Here's the website for the new novel.

Galen is a medicomagical xenopathologist that specializes in vectored curses. Setting is Juncture (Possum's world). So far I've got a pretty good overall plot, an outline for the prologue and book 1 (estimate about 25k words for book 1), and a vague plot for book 2. Prologue is from the Demon Wars, book 1 is in the outskirts of Juncture, and book 2 will mostly be in Juncture proper.

I'm excited.
